Naalakkersuisut Approves New Executive Order to Facilitate Access to Inshore Fishing
On June 15, 2026, Naalakkersuisut approved a new executive order on licenses and quotas, ensuring easier access to the inshore fishery.
Particular attention should be drawn to the following changes:
- Removal of Age Requirement: The age requirement of 18–29 years for an inshore halibut license has been removed.
- Presence at Landing: Dinghy fishers are no longer required to be personally present when landing catches on their license, provided they are registered in the Central Business Register (CVR) and the vessel is registered.
- License Utilization: The requirement to have utilized one’s license before December 1st to qualify for a corresponding license the following year has been abolished.
- Exemptions for Specific Regions: A general exemption from the requirements in §15 has been introduced for applicants residing in Qaanaaq or East Greenland, meaning they no longer need to apply for a dispensation. They can now obtain a license by providing documentation from the municipality confirming their residency in Qaanaaq (including settlements) or East Greenland.
Additionally, a number of corrections and adjustments have been made. This includes the size of vessels permitted to fish inshore, where an incorrect conversion existed in the previous executive order. It is now clarified that vessels can be up to 24 meters in length overall (LOA), ensuring that no current vessels are excluded from the fishery. Furthermore, the regulations for recreational fishers with a license to land cod have been clarified regarding the application process and permitted gear.
It has been important for Naalakkersuisut to ensure a more flexible executive order that creates a supportive framework for the fishing industry. The executive order will enter into force on July 15, 2026.
