In accordance with Section 28 of the Greenland Self-Government Executive Order on Technical Regulation of Fisheries, it is stated that: ‘The master of the vessel shall, within 24 hours, notify GFJK of any lost gear and provide the following information:’

1) Vessel name and radio call sign.

2) Type of gear lost.

3) Number or quantity of lost gear.

4) Date and time of the loss.

5) Position of the lost gear.

6) The measures taken to recover the gear.

Subsection 2. If the gear or parts of the gear are subsequently successfully recovered, or if another actor recovers abandoned or unmarked gear, the following must be reported to GFJK within 24 hours of the recovery:

1) Vessel name and radio call sign of the vessel recovering the gear.

2) Name and radio call sign of the vessel that lost the gear.

3) Type of gear recovered.

4) Number or quantity of gear recovered.

5) Date and time the gear was recovered.

6) Position of the recovered gear.

Subsection 3. In the event of lost gear, the fisheries control authority may notify the relevant coastal state or Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMO).

Subsection 4. Lost gear within 3 nautical miles of the baseline must be reported to GFJK via the landing site.

Consequently, GFJK has developed a form for fishers to provide the information required by the executive order. This form must be submitted to the landing site in connection with the landing of the catch.

Losing gear is not illegal. On the contrary, failure to report it can result in a fine. It is therefore important to notify GFJK every time you lose gear. The form can either be printed and filled out by hand—after which the landing site can submit it along with the logbooks—or completed on a computer and sent directly to GFJK at gfjk@nanoq.gl.
