In connection with the Government of Greenland’s new executive orders on the hunting and protection of caribou and muskoxen in 2025, a mandatory catch reporting requirement was introduced. Therefore, 2026 licenses can only be issued to applicants who have submitted a catch report for the previous calendar year. This is in addition to new applicants who meet the criteria to be granted a license.
In this regard, the Ministry of Fisheries, Hunting, Agriculture and Self-Sufficiency has investigated how many catch reports have been received from the summer and autumn of 2025. License holders have had the opportunity to submit their catch reports either by returning their licenses to the municipality or by reporting their catch via www.sullissivik.gl.
| Species | 2025 Issued licenses | 2025 Catch reports | In % | Missing catch reports | As % |
| Caribou | 5,798 | 2,543 | 44% | 3,255 | 56% |
| Muskox | 1,362 | 762 | 56% | 600 | 44% |
It appears that a total of 5,798 caribou licenses were issued throughout Greenland in 2025, and only 2,543 of these have been returned with a catch report. This corresponds to only 44% of the issued licenses. Consequently, 3,255 caribou licenses from 2025 remain unreturned.
The corresponding figures for muskox licenses show that 1,362 licenses were issued throughout Greenland in 2025, and only 762 of these have been returned with a catch report. This corresponds to only 56% of the issued licenses. Consequently, 600 muskox licenses from 2025 remain unreturned.
The Ministry has sent this year’s quotas and hunting seasons for caribou and muskoxen out for public consultation, with a deadline of June 24, 2026. There are no significant changes compared to 2025. It will be possible to submit 2025 catch reports for caribou and muskoxen until July 31, 2026; this can be done by returning the license to the municipality or by submitting the catch report via www.sullissivik.gl.
All missing catch reports must be forwarded by the municipalities to TUTUM@NANOQ.GL.
